Prince Harry, Meghan Markle planned to flee to South Africa before US move

Prince Harry once dreamed of escaping the UK, but California wasn’t his first choice.

According to explosive revelations, Harry and Meghan Markle originally planned to split their time between Britain and Cape Town, South Africa.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex wanted a quieter life away from the relentless media circus while still serving Queen Elizabeth II.

The late Queen reportedly supported the idea. But when Harry sent the detailed plan in writing to his father, then-Prince Charles, the proposal leaked, sparking a tabloid frenzy that killed the move before it even began.

Africa held deep meaning for Harry. It was where he found refuge after Princess Diana’s death and the source of the Botswana diamond in Meghan’s engagement ring.

New Zealand was briefly floated as another option, but Harry was convinced Africa was the perfect fit.

In his memoir Spare, Harry admitted the collapse of the Cape Town plan forced the couple to look elsewhere, ultimately leading them to Montecito, California, where they now live with Archie and Lilibet.
