King Charles got more than he wished for during a sweet royal outing this week: a reminder that he was once every girl’s dream.
The monarch, 76, paid a special visit to Surrey on September 18 to meet 116-year-old Ethel Caterham, officially the world’s oldest living person.
Caterham, who marked her milestone birthday just last month, lit up when she finally came face-to-face with the King.
She surprised Charles by reminiscing about his 1969 investiture as Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle, telling him: “I remember when your mother crowned you… and all the girls were in love with you and wanted to marry you.”
The room erupted in laughter, with Caterham’s granddaughter chiming in: “You said that the other day, didn’t you? That Prince Charles was so handsome — a true prince, and now the King.”
A slightly bashful Charles shot back with self-deprecating humour: “Yes, well, all that’s left of him anyway.”
