Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks are finally giving the world a deeper look at Canadian actor John Candy through their new film, John Candy: I Like Me.

On Thursday, Sept. 4, the documentary premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, where director Hanks and producer Reynolds met with the media to discuss the project.

Reynolds revealed that he had long sensed Candy's struggles with anxiety before his death.

"I didn't need anyone to tell me that he did," Reynolds said.

"Sometimes you can identify it really quickly, like, 'Oh, there's a guy whose skills are, to a certain degree, cultivated through a coping mechanism.' The strategies help him to "protect" himself.

The Deadpool star added that he was confident in his instincts.

“I would've bet a lot of money on that. I would be happy to be wrong, thrilled to be wrong, but he's also a people-pleaser,” Reynolds noted about character's nature.

Speaking more broadly about people-pleasing and mental health, Reynolds drew parallels to his own experiences.

"I have some of those traits, and people-pleasing and mental health, they don't coexist very well together at all,” he admitted.

He further explained this by pointing out that "you never want to be a problem for anybody else” or be considered a "burden."
