Julia Garner, star of Ozark and the new thriller The Weapons, has given fans renewed hope that the long-delayed Madonna biopic is still in the works.
The 31-year-old actress remains tight-lipped about the details but reportedly is set to step into the stilettos of the Queen of Pop in the film Who’s That Girl.
First announced in 2022, the project faced a major setback in January 2023 when Universal Pictures put it on hold.
However, speaking to W Magazine, Garner confirmed the movie is far from scrapped.
“I can’t say too much about it, but yes, it’s a work in progress,” she teased.
The Wolf Man actress also spoke about her admiration for Madonna’s music, citing Borderline and Papa Don’t Preach as her all-time favourites.
“There’s a lot of emotions in that song and I love that,” she said of the latter.
Earlier this summer, Madonna herself revealed she was busy reworking the script, sharing glimpses of late-night writing sessions on Instagram.
The 67-year-old singer has insisted she will both write and direct the project to ensure her story is told her way.
Garner recalled auditioning for the role by singing and dancing in front of the superstar.
“I just thought, OK, what would Madonna do? She’d own it,” she said.
Julia Garner and Jennifer Garner are not related. Despite sharing the same last name and both being actresses, there’s no family connection between them.
