Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried’s new thriller has shifted its release date following director Paul Feig’s decision.
The Housemaid, directed by Feig, is based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name, which has remained on the New York Times trade paperback bestseller list for more than five dozen weeks.
The story follows Millie (Sweeney), a young woman haunted by a troubled past who takes a job working for the wealthy Winchester family, Nina (Seyfried), Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), and their daughter Cecelia (Indiana Elle). But as Millie settles in, she discovers the Winchesters are hiding sinister and dangerous secrets of their own.
According to Deadline, the thriller, originally scheduled for a Christmas Day release, has now been moved up to December 19. This positions the premiere on the weekend leading into Christmas, the same slot where Sweeney’s hit rom-com Anyone But You took off in 2023.
Lionsgate reportedly advanced the release to capture the college-aged audience before the holiday break, banking on strong word-of-mouth to drive momentum.
Sweeney leads the film as Millie, a housemaid serving a family that appears picture-perfect on the surface. Seyfried portrays Nina, her emotionally volatile employer, while Sklenar plays Nina’s charismatic husband.
