Sir Ian McKellen delighted fans by confirming major characters' return in The Lord of the Rings upcoming interquel, The Hunt for Gollum.
The 86-year-old actor shared the exciting news during his appearance at For the Love of Fantasy fan event in London.
He admitted, “I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: There’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s a character in the movie called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed!”
Netizens speculate that McKellen might have hinted at his reprisal as the wizard Gandalf and Elijah Wood’s return as Frodo.
The X-Men star also confirmed the movie’s premise. “It’s going to be directed by Gollum, and it’s all about Gollum.”
Fans took to social media to share their theories about the plot for the new instalment. One commented, “The main character and storyline might be about Aragorn hunting Gollum.”
Another follower wrote, “They are referenced in The Fellowship of the Ring. This is quite a short section.”
Notably, The Hunt for Gollum will be directed by Andy Serkis, while filmmaker Peter Jackson will serve as a producer. The duo intends to give fans a similar aesthetic to the original Oscar-winning trilogy.
Though plot details are being kept under wraps, according to readers of Tolkien, the film will revolve around Gandalf trying to catch Gollum by enlisting the help of Aragorn.
For the unversed, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to be released on December 17, 2027.
