Princess Charlotte’s jewellery box is shaping up to be the stuff of royal legend.
While many of Kate Middleton’s loaned pieces from the royal vaults will one day be accessible to her daughter, insiders say the nine-year-old is tipped to receive one particularly historic showstopper: Princess Diana's Spencer Tiara.
The ethereal garland-style headpiece, studded with circular, rose-cut, cushion and pear-shaped diamonds, was Diana’s choice for her 1981 wedding and appeared throughout her royal life.
Owned by the Spencer family (not the Crown), the tiara passed to Diana’s brother, Earl Charles Spencer, after their father’s death.
During a 2022 London display, placard notes indicated the tiara is “now set to be inherited by Princess Charlotte,” fuelling excitement that Diana’s most romantic piece may return to the spotlight with the next generation.
Charlotte could also one day wear Diana’s sapphire engagement ring, currently Kate Middleton’s most famous jewel.
Diana’s “letter of wishes” asked that her jewellery be held by her sons so their wives could use it, helping explain why Kate now rotates Diana’s treasures, from the Collingwood pearl earrings to the Saudi sapphire suite, alongside newer gifts such as her Cartier Ballon Bleu watch and an eternity band from Prince William.
