King Charles quietly slipped into Ballater, Aberdeenshire, for a blink-and-you-missed-it engagement just days before his annual Balmoral summer stay.
The 76-year-old monarch inspected a newly created banner for Clan Farquharson at Victoria Hall, joined by the Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Alexander Manson and clan chieftain Philip Farquharson.
The visit tees up the Ballater Highland Games (held every second Thursday in August), where crowds will pack in for piping, Highland dancing and the signature Hill Race.
According to the Court Circular, Charles also met members of the Invercauld Highlanders, who will escort the clan chief onto the field, and the Pipes & Drums of the Scots College, Sydney.
A few eagle-eyed locals snapped photos as the King moved through the village.
The appearance comes as Balmoral Castle closed to the public for the season, signaling the royal family’s summer residence is kicking off.
Charles is expected to deliver an audio message for the 80th anniversary of VJ Day on Friday, then settle into the 50,000-acre Highland estate beloved by Queen Elizabeth II.
Balmoral is privately owned, meaning the King personally steers conservation and visitor projects, including the treasured Ballochbuie Forest, part of the ancient Caledonian woodland he’s called “almost sacred.”
Balmoral first opened more of its interiors to visitors in 2024, a tradition continuing this year, before the gates close for the royals’ late-summer retreat.
