It has been over a year since King Charles III and Prince Harry were last seen together in person, and according to a royal expert, the monarch’s health may be at the heart of the prolonged estrangement.
The father and son last met briefly in February 2024, but despite several trips to the UK by Prince Harry since then, the two have not reunited.
While some reports have attributed their continued distance to conflicting schedules and royal obligations, Newsweek's Chief Royal Correspondent Jack Royston suggests that King Charles is prioritizing his well-being following his cancer diagnosis.
“I think there's a chance we will [see them reunite], but I do think Charles is going to need to be slightly dragged into it,” Royston said on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show.
“I think Charles got to a point after his diagnosis where he took a decision that he needed to protect his peace, and that his younger son was causing him a significant amount of stress and anxiety in his life.”
According to Royston, the monarch's decision to distance himself was driven by a need to avoid emotional strain.
“That meant not exhaustingly spending all of his time running around after Harry,” he added.
“And so Harry is going to have to show Charles that having a relationship is not going to be exhausting and draining for him if Harry's serious about wanting to repair that relationship.”
While King Charles and Prince Harry have not met in person in 2025, their respective teams are believed to have remained in touch.
