Angelina Jolie joins Doug Liman for new spy thriller ‘The Initiative’

Hollywood A-list actress Angelina Jolie is teaming up again with BAFTA-nominated director Doug Liman for a brand-new action spy thriller, The Initiative.

Jolie and Liman famously worked together on the 2005 action-comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Universal Film Studios is finalising the deal points to secure The Initiative, which features Jolie starring, Liman directing, and F. Scott Frazier writing the script.

The movie will be produced by RK Films’ Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum, the prominent duo recently behind Netflix hit Damsel and Sony’s rom-com smash Anyone But You.

The producing pair had previously worked with Jolie on the big-budget Disney fantasy Maleficent movies.

The film has been described as “Training Day meets international espionage,” with Jolie taking on the role of Bright, a renegade spy who operates beyond the rules.

Sometimes, it takes a morally flexible agent to take down even more dangerous enemies. When a rookie operative named Charlie is assigned to her team, he quickly finds himself questioning whether Bright is out to eliminate him or if she’s simply willing to do whatever it takes to safeguard global security.

The creators expect the movie to enter production in the first quarter of 2026.

Studio executives Jay Polidoro, EVP of Production Development, and Tony Ducret, Director of Development, will lead and supervise the project.
