Panic gripped the upscale neighbourhoods around Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Montecito mansion this month as immigration raids swept across Southern California, with chaos erupting just minutes from the Sussexes’ front gate.
In a wave of unannounced detentions led by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Trump-era tactics returned with full force, leaving towns like Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, and Goleta in shock.
One raid in particular, just down the road from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, spiraled into a full-blown standoff.
On July 10, military-style vehicles stormed Glass House Farms in Carpinteria, detaining workers on the spot.
Eyewitnesses reported handcuffs, confusion, and protesters forming a human barrier across Casitas Pass Road to stop the arrests.
Similar raids were reported in nearby cities including Santa Maria, Oxnard, Fillmore, Ventura, and even Santa Barbara, just minutes from Harry and Meghan’s luxury $14 million estate.
Locals say ICE has turned up in unmarked cars, operating with zero warning and targeting immigrant communities under what Trump has dubbed the "largest mass deportation plan in US history."
A chilling directive issued in June by the US president called on federal agencies to do "all in their power" to escalate removals, focusing efforts on Democratic strongholds like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.
