Jimmy Fallon hopped on the train of late night talk show hosts opening up about the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, after the host suddenly announced its end.
On the July 17 broadcast of the show, the host told the audience that had just found out the night prior that the network would only allow the show to have a final season, which will end in May of next year.
The news was met with widespread disappointment from the live audience, as well as other celebrities and other famous television hosts after the episode aired.
Jimmy, who interviews celebrities at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, took to his Instagram stories to pen down his thoughts over the matter.
“I’m just as shocked as everyone,” he began, before adding, “Stephen is one of the sharpest, funniest hosts to ever do it. I really thought I’d ride this out with him for years to come.”
The 50-year-old went on to praise the former The Colbert Report host, adding that he was hopeful for Colbert’s future.
Notably, fellow industry veterans such as Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers have also expressed their disapproval and frustration over the news.
The executive responsible for giving the go ahead to Stephen Colbert’s show have noted that this was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”
