Stephen Colbert made a shocking announcement about The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, sparking reactions from fans.

In the latest episode, which aired on July 17, the host opened up about taking a break, saying, “It's not just the end of our show. I'm not being replaced. This is all just going away."

CBS executives commented on the cancellation, citing it to be a financial reason and not political.

“This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night," they said in a joint statement.

But rumours suggest otherwise. According to reports, Paramount is going through an $8 billion merger with Skydance Media, but the deal was dragged on because President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against CBS last year.

The case brought both Colbert and The Daily Show’s host Jon Stewart under the watchful eyes of Skydance Media executives.

On July 2, Paramount agreed to a settlement by paying $16 million to Trump's future presidential library. This decision was criticised by the host, who referred to it as a "big fat bribe."

However, the merger is currently stalled because the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) is delaying the approval of the license transfer.

For the unversed, Stephan Colbert took over as host of The Late Show in 2015 after broadcaster David Letterman, who initially launched the show back in 1993, making it a historic run of 32 years.
