The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will officially be coming to an end next year after having been on air for 33 years, announced the host in shocking news.
The network CBS also made a statement saying that the decision "is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night [television]," and "is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters.”
The news comes only two weeks after the network’s parent company, Paramount settled a lawsuit with President Donald Trump, stemming from a previous interview of CBS with presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Colbert announced the news on his show, having been a major critic of Trump.
He said on the cancellation, "I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners. And of course, I'm grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night in here, out there, all around the world."
Many are speculating that he is being removed due to his criticism of Trump, as people took to X to express their disappointment.
One user warned that the same was going to happen with other hosts, “CBS canceling The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was political. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is prob next. Paramount and David Ellison suck.”
Others seemed excited that he will not have more freedom with comments like, “This is not going to go well for CBS, they just gave Stephen Colbert the green light to say basically anything he wants for the next year,” and, “Stephen Colbert doesn’t need CBS anyway. Wherever he ends up, people are going to watch him even harder now. All CBS did was solidify the fact that they’ll be know until the end of time as just another spineless corporation that couldn’t do the right thing.”
One user claimed that this speaks to the larger political dangers at stake, “In case you missed it, the republicans cut off funding for NPR and PBS today. And later, CBS cancelled the Stephen Colbert show because he spoke the truth about trump. Make no mistake about it: Fascism is here, and we are goose stepping toward having one state-approved media.”
