New DC Superman, directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet, mounted the box office despite fueling debates over the director’s political remarks about the character.

The soft version of the superhero that is beginning the new DC Universe opened in theatres on Friday, July 11.

The movie earned $217 million during its opening weekend, according to Deadline and The Wrap.

On Sunday, July 13, the outlets confirmed that the film made $122 million domestically, in North America, and $95 million internationally.

The new DC Universe launch movie was made on a budget of $225 million.

According to The Wall Street Journal, it was estimated by DC Studios to bring in $100 million in its first weekend.

Recently, in an interview with The Times, Gunn remarked that the movie is “about politics, but on another level, it’s about morality.”

The remarks made fans sceptical about the movie.

"Do you never kill no matter what — which is what Superman believes — or do you have some balance, as Lois [Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan] believes?" the director continued. "It’s really about their relationship and the way different opinions on basic moral beliefs can tear two people apart."

The DC Studios co-head explained that, in general, "Superman is the story of America," in the sense that it follows "an immigrant that came from other places and populated the country."

However, for the director, the movie was about basic human kindness, and he noted that whoever takes offence from the movie’s kindness: “Screw them.”

However, many raised their voices over Gunn’s political remarks, including former Superman Dean Cain, who played the Man of Steel on TV in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman from 1993 to 1997.
