American filmmaker and co-owner of DC Studios, James Gunn’s Superman finally opened in theatres on Friday, July 11, launching a whole new DC Universe.

As the audience went to watch the classic superhero movie, however, the post-credit scene became controversial.

The controversial scenes include an exchange between Mister Terrific and Superman as they clean up Metropolis after the destruction caused by Lex Luthor and his minions.

However, writer Ash Crossan and director Gunn explained the reason for choosing these credit scenes.

“Well, I found in my time at Marvel that, first of all, the post-credit scenes of mine at Marvel that people liked the best were the stupid ones,” said Gunn, who previously helmed all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel Studios. “So, with Howard the Duck at the end of Guardians and Stan Lee at the end of Guardians 2.”

James Gunn said he's only open to using post-credit scenes if they definitely lead to something real—like teasing a Supergirl movie that's already confirmed—because he’s seen too many setups (including his own) that never pay off.

“But I don't want to set up stuff just because it's a shocking post-credit scene that we're never going to pay off,” the director added. “However, I do like giving the audience something for having stuck around through the credits and seeing who all the hardworking people are on the film.”

Therefore, Gunn believes he has added a “Terrific at the end” because he wanted to give something fun to the audience at the end.
