Michael Mann will be honoured with the Lumière Award at the classic film-focused Lumière Festival in Lyon this fall.

The Institute Lumière, honoured the American screenwriter’s 40-year journey marked by blockbuster movies including Heat, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, and Collateral.

The two-time Primetime Emmy Awards winner was also praised for his direction of “screen legends” such as, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Tom Cruise, Natalie Portman, Gong Li, and James Cann.

The Institute released a statement, eulogising BAFTA Award winner: “He is both rooted in a strong Hollywood tradition and embodies a personal and innovative cinema through his choice of subjects, his approach to directing, storytelling and aesthetics.”

“With true independence—and at times a certain solitude—he is one of the most important filmmakers in the history of cinema,” the statement continued.

While responding to Lumière Festival’s invitation, four-time Academy Awards nominee said: “The answer is: great, I’d love to do it. The previous Lumière with Guillermo was a brilliant night. Pure cinema. And a great time. It all sounds brilliant. I’m in.”

Michael Mann is the latest recipient of the prestigious Lumière Award.

The past honourees include Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Jane Fonda, Francis Ford Coppola, Quentin Tarantino, Tim Burton as well as Isabelle Huppert, who received the award last year.

Michael Mann has been nominated for four Academy Awards but has not won any.
