Dakota Johnson is entering her filmmaking era with a directorial feature debut, based on the script of Vanessa Burghardt, who worked as Materialist star’s daughter in Cha Cha Real Smooth.
The 35-year-old acclaimed American actress appeared at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) in Czech Republic, where she was honoured with the event’s prestigious President Award.
Opening up about her upcoming project, the Fifty Shades of Grey star told reporters, “I think I’ll direct a feature, a very small one, hopefully soon and it’s very close to my heart.”
She praised Vanessa, saying, “She’s an incredible autistic actress. With her I feel protective and I know her very well, and I just won’t let anyone else do it.”
Dakota, who previously directed Coldplay music video Cry Cry Cry and a short film Loser Baby, expressed nervousness about the role of director, saying, “I have always felt that I am not ready to direct a feature. I don’t have the confidence.”
On the acting front, the Independent Spirit Award winner has just completed the filming of Amazon MGM Studios’ Verity, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling psychological thriller.
Verity is scheduled for release on May 15, 2026.
Dakota Johnson has never married. However, her dating history includes relationships with musician Chris Martin and actor Jordan Mastersen.
She dated Mastersen from 2011 till 2014 and her relationship with Martin, which started in 2016, ended recently in June 2025.
