The 2023 M3GAN was highly praised for being true to its sci-fi horror genre and the sequel was expected to be a big hit but did not live up to its potential.
The sequel, M3GAN 2.0 was released in June 2025 but it did not hit big like the first edition did and the producer has some thoughts why it didn’t.
Speaking on Spotify’s The Town podcast, Jason Blum revealed why he thins the movies flopped.
“We all thought M3GAN was like Superman”, Jason spoke “We could do anything to her. We could change genres. We could put her in the summer. We could make her look different. We could turn her from a bad guy into a good guy. And we classically over-thought how powerful people’s engagement was, really, with her.”
The producer from Blumhouse said that the switch between genres going from horror to action might have caused the movie to not hit big as well.
Along with the genre change, he also said that a summer release instead of an autumn release affected the box office numbers.
