‘90s chart queens Brandy and Monica released their hit duet track, The Boy Is Mine, in 1998, which spent 13 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts and also won a Grammy.

Years later, during their joint appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, broadcast on Wednesday, June 25, the R&B icons made a surprising revelation about their hit song.

Jimmy asked Brandy if it was true that she got the idea for the 1998 track from an episode of The Jerry Springer Show.

“Yes, I was a huge Jerry Springer fan,” Brandy shared with the host. “And one of the topics was, 'The boy is mine.' I'm like, 'Oh my God, song idea, let's do this.'”

When she had the inspiration, Brandy was determined to bring Monica on board for the song.

“I was always a fan of hers and I wanted to work with her,” she added. “So I called her up and asked her to be a part of the song, and she said yes — and here we are.”

Monica said that, at first, she thought people would believe they were actually fighting because of the song's nature. Brandy chimed in to say, "That was the point."

The Grammy-winning artists are set to close out 2025 with The Boy Is Mine Tour.

The tour will start in Cincinnati on Oct. 16 and wrap on Dec. 7 in Houston.
