As the trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs crosses its one-month mark, the music mogul’s attorneys are finding new ways to dent prosecutors’ credibility.
The first month saw horrifying testimonies from Casandra Ventura, better known as Cassie, Kid Cudi and former employees.
However, well-known clinical psychologist and TV personality Phillip McGraw (Dr. Phil) recently talked to the DailyMail to make a stunning prediction about the high-profile trial.
McGraw warned the prosecutors that their case is in danger of unravelling due to over-reliance on emotionally charged accounts of the alleged victims.
“They may have thought their evidence against Combs was so emotionally powerful, so sensational that a jury would be so offended that they’d convict Combs regardless of whether the facts precisely line up with the charges,” the author told the outlet.
The 74-year-old used Cassie’s testimony as an example to point out that “none of that is illegal in and of itself” and believes that “the prosecution may have overcharged this case.”
Dr. Phil said that there is a disparity between public perception and legal evidence, which could be exploited by the defence to request a verdict even before jury deliberation.
The assessment comes after Diddy’s lawyers filed a motion to accuse the other side of deliberately putting forward false testimonies.
The petition was filed on June 7, which argues that the claims made by one of Cassie’s friends, Bryana Bongolan, were incorrect.
Bongolan testified to corroborate Cassie’s account that she saw her friend being dangled from the balcony of a 17-storey building by Diddy.
However, the defence provided text message conversations between her and the rapper’s chief of staff.
In the exchange, the former partner of Diddy allegedly implied that she heard about the balcony incident rather than actually witnessing it.
As a result, the defence made its second mistrial request after the first was denied over evidence discrepancy.
Sean “Diddy” Combs was indicted in the Southern District of New York on charges of racketeering, sex trafficking by force and transportation for purposes of prostitution.
