King Charles vs. Prince William: The better ruler?

King Charles, at 76 and battling cancer, has no plans ‘slowing down’ in his royal duties, yet his eldest son and heir, Prince William is taking on the King-in-waiting role pretty seriously now, as per experts.

With Charles only ascending to the throne at 73, after a long wait that actually made him the longest-serving heir-apparent in British history, there isn’t much to judge his reign from as yet.

However, two grave matters continue to mar his reign; his younger son Prince Harry’s ongoing rift with the royals, and his ‘disgraced’ brother Prince Andrew’s links to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

That’s not all, as another shadow seems to loom over King Charles’ reign as his health takes a downturn; the Prince of Wales gaining more strength within the Palace as the future King. And while this may not be an immediate problem, it is interesting to catch glimpses of the kind of ruler William would be.

Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton are notably much more modern in how they lead their lives as senior royals, casually skipping engagements to make time for family, moving to the countryside for a more ‘normal’ life for their kids, etc.

This is a far cry from the more traditional way of royal life that King Charles had to lead in his mother’s shadow; while Charles too made some unorthodox decisions, he has largely kept up with royal traditions over the years.

Meanwhile, the monarch also seems to have a soft spot for his family as per royal insiders, despite their digressions.

But for Prince William, who is said to be ‘flexing his muscles’ around the Palace more, his father Charles is ‘too complacent’ and seems to be ‘losing control’, as per Daily Beast.

Experts suggest that what may have started as just a difference of opinions in how to manage familial conflicts between Charles and William, father-son could be headed for a bigger tussle as William gains importance.

William will certainly have a ‘different’ style and approach to monarchy than King Charles, as royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams pointed out to In Touch, saying, “Their style is different, so are their ages. William will want a changed monarchy which appeals in the future in a different way.”

One thing is certain, once Prince William becomes King, the world can expect a much more ‘informal’ monarchy than Queen Elizabeth and Charles’.
