Rubby Pérez, the esteemed Dominican merengue singer, took his last breath at the age of 69 as a result of the Jet Set nightclub tragedy.
The Volveré singer was performing into the early hours on Monday when the roof of the nightclub, which is one of the most popular establishments in the Dominican Republic collapsed, trapping heaps of attendees under the rubble.
According to Rolling Stone, Rubby’s family stated that he paramedics "found him singing" beneath the wreckage, after which he was taken to a local hospital the same day.
However, reports on April 8 noted that the former lead vocalist for the Wilfrido Vargas’ orchestra had passed away, with his Instagram profile picture being changed to black posthumously.
The devastating incident also claimed the lives of the saxophonist performing alongside Rubby, former Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel, and the MLB player Tony Blanco.
Additionally, authorities have reported that around 146 guests have been rescued from underneath the rubble, while approximately 100 are missing and at least 79 club-goers have been reported dead as a result of the collapse.
Rubby had accomplished many feats during his lifetime including him being dubbed “the highest voice of merengue” along with his song Enamorado de Ella gaining the 29th spot on the Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs chart.
