Jay North, known for playing the lead in sitcom Dennis the Menace, passed away at the age of 73 on Sunday after losing a "long battle."

The news of his demise was announced by his close friend Laurie Jacobson, who posted the obituary on social media.

Laurie penned down a heartfelt note for her pal, revealing the cause of his death. “Our friend JAY NORTH has been fighting cancer for a number of years and this morning at noon EST, Jay passed peacefully at home,” the friend said.

She also revealed how the child star did not let his “difficult journey in Hollywood and after” define “his life.”

The legend's friend disclosed he used to call “frequently” and made sure to end every conversation with: “I love you with all my heart.”

Jay rose to fame after playing mischievous Dennis Mitchell in the four-part series, based on a comic strip that was written by Hank Ketchum. 

The TV show revolved around a young boy who used to create problems for his next-door neighbours.

The Zebra actor, who had a “heart as big as mountain”, decided to advocate for the rights of young actors after he experienced abuse from his aunt who was his guardian.

The show, comprising of four seasons, began in October 1959 and was cancelled in 1963, airing 146 episodes in total. 

Other cast members included Herbert Anderson, Gloria Henry, Billy Booth, Sylvia Field and Gale Gordon.
