Zoe Saldana made history as she became the first American of Dominican origin to receive an Oscar.
On Sunday, March 2, the Emilia Perez star was awarded the Best Actress for Supporting Role award at the 97th Annual Academy Awards ceremony, which she dedicated to a beloved family member.
Sharing her latest achievement, Saldana dedicated her major feat to her grandmother, Argentina Cesse.
The From Scratch main lead was moved to tears as she began her speech, “My mom is here. My whole family's here. I am floored by this honor.”
“My grandmother came to this country in 1961. I am a proud child of immigrant parents with dreams and dignity and hard-working hands, and I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award,” the Oscar winner continued. “And I know I will not be the last. I hope!”
In the Netflix movie, Saldana portrayed a strong character where she got a chance to sing and speak in Spanish, “my grandmother would’ve been thrilled if she were here.”
Her speech not only honored her family, it also discloses her hope for a more inclusive future in cinema.
With her historic win, Saldana outshined. Monica Barbaro for her role in A Complete Unknown, Ariana Grande Wicked, Felicity Jones The Brutalist, Isabella Rossellini Conclave.
