Jaafar Jackson details mastering vocals to match King of Pop in biopic

Jaafar Jackson shared insight into how he perfected King of Pop Michael Jackson’s vocals in the Michael biopic, despite having singing in his blood.

Jaafar is nephew of Michael and son of Jermaine Jackson. He had previous singing experience before the film and had covered several songs before making his own music.

In an interview with The Kelly Clarkson Show, the host pointed out that he has a different, deeper voice than then of Michael and asked how he learned to speak like his uncle.

"I really read a lot of books in his voice and each book I got better basically," he said. Although it "took a lot of time" to nail the voice, he eventually got to the point where it came out "naturally."

As per the People magazine, ahead of taking on the task of replicating Michael's legendary voice and performing skills, film’s frontman practiced for hours on end.

Initially fans questioned whether the vocals would rely entirely on the original recordings, it was later confirmed that late icon’s nephew’s voice was genuinely part of the film’s soundtracks.

In some scenarios he blended his voice with Michael’s, meanwhile, in other moments like – solo sessions in studio – was solely the breakout star’s vocals.

“When I was doing all the performances, I was actually singing out live in the microphone on top of Michael’s track. So it’s a blend of my vocal and Michael’s," he explained in an interview on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle.

Meanwhile, Juliano Valdi, who portrayed a 10-year-old version of Michael, also learned how to sing as the young Jackson 5 star and went through a similar process as Jaafar.

The music supervisor John Warhust also confirmed that both the actors were capable of recording full songs independently.

“We had the discussion a lot, could we have Jaafar and Juliano go to a studio and record those songs, and the answer was yes,” Warhurst told The Hollywood Reporter. “They were capable of delivering those vocals.”

The film traces Michael’s rise from his early career to global superstardom, with music playing a central role in the storytelling.

Michael is now running theatres.
