Henry Cavill is anticipating his return as yet another fantasy hero sooner than expected.
The Superman alum is set to star in the Highlander reboot, director by Chad Stahelski, best known for directing the John Wick films.
During an appearance on the latest episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the filmmaker dished out his plans for the reboot, hoping it expands into a full-fledged franchise.
"I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline 'there can only be one,' you can’t just kill everybody the first time,” he said in the interview.
“I’ll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that, but we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows,” Stahelski explained, “and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property.”
The first Highlander film was released in 1986, starring Christopher Lambert in the role of Connor MacLeod aka Highlander.
Besides the four films in the franchise, the fantasy character has been adapted into one made-for-TV film, two live-action television series, an animated television series, an anime film, a flash animation series, and more.
After he was announced to lead the upcoming film, Henry Cavill expressed his excitement at what he could do with such a fleshed-out character.
“Deep diving into franchise storytelling with all the tools at our disposal, is going to make this an adventure I (and hopefully all of you) shall never forget,” he said in an interview last year.
“And as you can see from the swipe, I've lately been dipping into some of my Scottish heritage, and inadvertently getting my baseline research underway!" the Witcher alum added.
