Mel B is still learning to live with her disability.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, the 48-year-old singer recalled her struggle with stutter during her childhood, which was exacerbated following her parents’ separation.
Calling it a “debilitating” experience, the Spice Girl shared that she would constantly slap her knee to get the difficult words out, a practice she adopted from her father who struggled with a speech impediment too.
However, the “terrifying” ordeal did not stop in her childhood only, instead, Mel B revealed that she still faces communication impairments during moments of excitement.
“Having a stutter can be really debilitating,” she shared with the outlet. “It can really knock your confidence and I had mine for quite a while and I do get it every now and again when I get quite excited.”
She noted that she has “just got lots to say,” However, “it can be really daunting for any kind of communication.”
“I was young when I had my stutter, but I can only remember it as the fact it was just really frustrating,” Mel B continued. “You're thinking one thing in your head, but what's actually coming out...
"it's just a discombobulation of the start of words or the end of one word. It can be really, really terrifying,” she added.
