Steven Spielberg recently made major revelation about Indiana Jones casting in his latest interview.
The legendary moviemaker was in conversation with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson on IMO podcast where he revealed that Tom Selleck was his and director George Lucas’ first choice.
“What happened was George and I had interviewed a lot of people to play Indiana Jones,” recalled Steven.
Reflecting on the casting process, the Jaws director mentioned, “We tested them and they came to George’s. He had a small office in Los Angeles across from Universal. And we tested a lot of actresses for Marion Ravenwood and a lot of actors, especially for Indiana Jones.”
The Oscar-winning moviemaker then shared that he and George “decided Tom” to play Indiana Jones.
“He came in and he read for the part. Oh, he was good. His test was good. I loved it,” explained the 79-year-old.
However, both directors were unaware of Tom’s contract to CBS, the network behind Magnum PI, which began in 1980 and ran for eight seasons until 1988.
“We wanted Tom and gave the part to him and then he had an outstanding contract with CBS network” to do the show, which they didn’t know at the time.
Steven added that the former Warner Bros executive Bob Daly and the network “immediately put Magnum PI into production, preempting Tom from being in Indiana Jones”.
