Harry Potter revival has been hit by an early casting shake-up.

Reportedly, the young actress Gracie Cochrane quit her role as Ginny Weasley before the second season has even begun filming.

Cochrane, who will still appear in the first season of HBO’s ambitious reboot of the beloved fantasy saga, will not return for Chamber of Secrets, due to what her family called “unforeseen circumstances”.

The news comes months before the series is set to land on screens at Christmas.

In a heartfelt statement, her family said stepping away had been “a challenging decision”, adding that Gracie’s time in the Wizarding World had been “truly wonderful”.

They thanked casting director Lucy Bevan and the production team for an unforgettable experience, while insisting the young star is “excited about the opportunities her future holds”.

HBO has backed the decision, saying they respect her choice and wish her well, and thanking her for her work on season one.

Although filming on the first season is complete, Ginny’s role is relatively small in Philosopher’s Stone.

She appeared mainly at King’s Cross Station and briefly at the end of term.

However, her character becomes far more central in Chamber of Secrets, where she is key to the unfolding mystery.

Showrunner Francesca Gardiner has confirmed the second season is expected to start production this autumn, with Succession writer Jon Brown stepping up as co-showrunner to keep the project on track amid a tight schedule.

Brown said working on Philosopher’s Stone had been “a joy”, joking that “you’re never too old to get your invitation to Hogwarts”.

The reboot stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron and Arabella Stanton as Hermione, with John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid and Paapa Essiedu as Snape, as excitement continues to build around the take on J.K. Rowling’s magical world.
