Hilary Duff is one of the few child stars who wasn’t exposed to dark side of child stardom.

The actress, who rose to fame with her Lizzie McGuire role, was in conversation with Dan Macsai, senior editor at Time, at the Time100 Summit where she revealed that after watching documentaries such as Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV and Framing Britney Spears, had made her emotional.

“It's such a long time ago, but it's an out-of-body experience,” said the 38-year-old.

Hilary confessed that she felt “quite sad” when she watched a lot of those documentaries for “obvious reasons”.

However, the Younger actress told Dan that she’s “very grateful” not to be in any position that would leave any “battle wounds” on her.

Reflecting on her early acting career, Hilary noted, “I have held a job as an adult since I was nine-years-old. I had a very different upbringing, a lot of missed experiences, but also a lot of amazing ones.”

“I'm a scrubby kid from Texas. I sometimes am like, ‘How did I get here? How did I end up here?'” she continued.

But now, after working so many years in the industry, Hilary shared that she always had to be “able to hold” her own “in a room full of adults constantly and was expected to show up and be professional”.

The actress recalled that her discipline defined her early as she had to keep “grinding” through “exhaustion or sickness”.

“It's taught me a lot and it's completely formed who I am, and I'm proud of that person,” added Hilary.
