Michael Jackson was honoured with a controversial biopic where his nephew Jaafar Jackson plays the "King of Pop."

The movie was a commercial success after it had a historic opening weekend, making over $100 million globally.

Colin Jost decided to include this in the weekend updates of Saturday Night Live episode where he announced about the project's success.

He stated about the project which made “$97 million in its opening weekend which was the most in music biopic has ever grossed.”

The comdeian poked fun at the record: “It didn’t even crack the top 10 grossest weekends involving Michael Jackson.”

The 43-year-old was called out for making fun of the Grammy-winning musician, with one X user noting: “No artist, living or dead, is as publicly disrespected as Michael Jackson.”

Another netizen criticised: “SNL irritates me BADDD,” while a third pointed out: “It’s a cheap laugh that won’t fail. They should be more creative next time.”

The motion picture sparked a debate about the Smooth Criminal crooner’s intentions, bringing controversies back in spotlight.

Young fans have flooded the theatres, showing support to the late musician and streaming his music.

After its release, Michael’s music topped global charts with his tracks seeing a surge of almost 116% nearly two decades after his passing.
