George Clooney spoke out against political violence while attending the 51st Chaplin Award Gala, where he was honored for his career achievements.
During his speech, the Oscar-winning actor addressed the recent shooting outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where an armed individual reportedly attempted to enter the venue before opening fire.
As per Variety, he said, “I can’t be here on a night like tonight and just ignore everything that’s going on in the world."
He went on to add, "I disagree with everything that this administration stands for, but there’s no place for the kind of violence we saw two nights ago in Washington, D.C. Nor is there a room for this kind of violence in Minnesota with Alex Pretti or Renée Good.”
Even though the 63-year-old actor has criticized Donald Trump in the past, but he chose not to name him this time, speaking more broadly about hate and cruelty.
He stated, “It seems to me there’s a struggle that has to be won against hatred and corruption and cruelty and violence. It’s a struggle for the very soul of this republic because to foment hate and violence is to inherit the wind.”
Moreover, he wrapped up his remarks by urging Americans to reflect on their role as citizens, mentioning that people from all sides must come together to repair divisions and build a better future.
