Lisa Kudrow has opened up about the darker side of working on hit sitcom Friends.

The 62-year-old star revealed that behind the laughs, things could get “mean” and “brutal” on set.

Lisa, who shot to global fame as quirky Phoebe Buffay, admitted that while the cast shared a close bond, the atmosphere behind the scenes was far from cosy.

Speaking to The Times, she recalled how mistakes during filming in front of a live audience could spark harsh reactions from the largely male writing team.

“With 400 people watching, if you messed up a line, it could get nasty,” she said, describing insults that were sometimes thrown around when scenes didn’t land perfectly.

She also touched on the uncomfortable environment in the writers’ room, claiming conversations could cross the line.

According to Lisa, discussions reportedly included inappropriate comments about co-stars Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox, making the atmosphere feel “intense”.

Despite the tension, The Comeback star took a pragmatic approach.

“They were up until 3am trying to make the show work,” she explained, adding that she chose not to take comments personally if they were said behind her back.

Off-screen, however, life was far more grounded.

Married to advertising executive Michel Stern since 1995, she believes her stable home life shielded her from the intense scrutiny faced by some of her co-stars.

“At home, it’s family, it’s real life,” she said.

“You can’t carry that ‘TV star’ mindset back with you.”

Her candid reflections offer a surprising glimpse behind one of television’s most beloved shows.
