Hugh Dancy is leading the charge in a glittering new ensemble for The Custom of the Country, the highly anticipated film adaptation of Edith Wharton’s classic novel.

The 50-year-old actor is joined by Dominic West, Rose Leslie, and rising star Sydney Sweeney, who takes on the iconic role of Undine Spragg.

Deadline reports that the trio joins a powerhouse cast including Josh Finan, Matthew Goode, Louis Garrell, Martha Plimpton, Ian Hart, James McArdle, Rosie Sheehy, Irene Jacob, Miranda Richardson, Louisa Harland, Ronkẹ Adékọluẹ́jọ́, and Leo Woodall.

Production is already underway, with Josie Rourke writing and directing.

Sweeney’s Undine is a fiercely ambitious Midwestern woman determined to climb the social ladder in turn-of-the-century New York.

With beauty, brains, and a knack for stirring up trouble, she navigates high society, courts controversy, and chases love and fortune across America and Europe.

“Undine Spragg is the original dangerous woman,” Rourke said.

“Sydney lived in my head as this iconic character – it’s as if Wharton wrote the role for her.”

Not only starring, the Euphoria actress is producing alongside Charles Finch, Alison Owen, and StudioCanal, ensuring the film is packed with drama, style, and flair.

Casting guru Nina Gold has been instrumental in assembling the ensemble, while StudioCanal CEO Anna Marsh praised the team: “This project brings Wharton’s sharp observations into a new cinematic era.”
