Billy Porter’s chilling health battle: ‘I was dead for three days’

Billy Porter has revealed the shocking moment doctors told him he had effectively been “dead for three days” during a terrifying medical crisis last year.

The 56-year-old performer was forced to withdraw from his role as the Emcee in the Broadway revival of Cabaret in September 2025 after falling seriously ill.

At the time, it was confirmed he was battling a severe case of sepsis, a life-threatening condition in which the body’s extreme response to infection can damage organs and tissues.

Now, speaking on the Outlaws with TS Madison podcast, Porter has opened up about just how close he came to death.

What began as a routine medical check quickly spiralled into a life-or-death emergency when doctors discovered a kidney stone lodged in his urethra.

Behind it, a severe infection had built up, triggering a dangerous form of sepsis known as urosepsis, which spreads from the urinary tract to the kidneys.

Broadway star described the horrifying moment doctors intervened.

He explained that once surgeons accessed the blockage, they discovered a massive build-up of infection.

Within minutes, his condition deteriorated and he became critically ill.

Doctors rushed to place him on an ECMO machine, a life-support system that pumps blood through an artificial lung outside the body to oxygenate it while the organs recover.

Porter was placed in a coma for several days.

“I was on the ECMO machine. I was dead for three days,” he said, describing the experience as nothing short of miraculous.

When he finally woke, doctors revealed another complication.

His legs had developed compartment syndrome, forcing surgeons to cut open both sides of his leg from knee to hip to save it.

Now fully recovered, Cinderella star says the ordeal has changed his life.

The Emmy-winning star says surviving the crisis has pushed him to work smarter, calling himself a “walking miracle.”
