Saturday Night Live’s cold open is all caught up with the fast-paced, changing geopolitical tensions between Iran and the United States, as the sketch comedy show’s Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth give context into their thought processes.
James Austin Johnson’s President of the United States begins the press conference with a dark greeting, introducing himself, and explaining the attacks.
“Good evening, and Happy World War III to all who celebrate, it’s me Donald Trump FIFA peace prize winner and Nobel peace prize taker…I launched this attack after me and my Board of Peace decided that we were bored of peace,” he stated.
Johnson’s Trump then mentions how Iran has been two weeks away from developing a nuclear weapon for over a decade, so they had to act now and go to war to distract from the Epstein files.
The conference also had a meta moment later on when he explains that the reason the strikes on Iran took place during the early hours of Saturday was firstly because the stock market would be closed for the weekend.
Secondly, it was to cause a lot of rage, fear and chaos in the Saturday Night Live writer’s room, clarifying that they re-wrote the script on the occasion and had to scrap their earlier sketch to keep up with the latest turn of events.
The comedian then introduces Colin Jost’s Pete who declared at one point that he was scared and didn’t know what he was doing " When he said we were going to blow up the leader of Iran, I thought he was kidding," referring to Johnson’s Trump.
Notably, the faux US Secretary of War then tells people that they should be thanking them for taking out an oppressive leader before the fake President chimes in to warn them to not get any ideas.
