Disney’s live-action Tangled may not be as shelved as fans believed despite earlier claims that the project was quietly paused following the lukewarm response to Snow White.

New reports suggest the studio is very much pushing ahead and already eyeing its potential Rapunzel.

Previously, Scarlett Johansson made headlines for being considered for the role of Mother Gothel. Reportedly Johansson has now cancelled her plans on taking this role due to scheduling conflicts, according to insider Jeff Sneider.

According to Nexus Point News, four sought-after young actresses are being considered for Rapunzel. Still, it remains unclear whether any formal screen tests have taken place.

Sadie Sink, McKenna Grace, Emma Myers, and Isabel May, all four have reportedly come up in internal discussions, but one name appears to be making the strongest impression.

Sources say Sadie Sink is being mentioned the most consistently across multiple channels, suggesting the Stranger Things breakout could be Disney’s unofficial frontrunner.

Behind the camera, reports about the directing choice have also evolved. Although Baz Luhrmann was once rumoured to be in the mix, THR maintains that Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) is still attached to direct.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson wrote down the latest version of the screenplay, alongside Kristin Burr and Emmy-winner Lucy Kitada producing.

Disney’s original Tangled loosely reimagined the classic Rapunzel fairy tale following a princess with magical hair kept hidden in a tower by the manipulative Mother Gothel.

No production or release dates have been revealed so far.
