Matthew Perry died two years ago, and Jennifer Aniston is still mourning the loss, but she wasn’t initially shocked.
Recently, in a new interview with Elle, Aniston revealed that her Friends co-star and longtime friend Perry’s death was “so alarming and shocking, yet not shocking."
Perry, who was found dead at his Los Angeles apartment after accidentally drowning, was determined to have died from the acute effects of ketamine, according to an autopsy.
Before his tragic death, the actor had spoken openly about his struggles with addiction throughout his life. Taking his view into perspective, Aniston said that Perry "wanted happiness more than anything.”
She told the outlet that the fact that he never “achieved” that happiness makes her sad “because he deserved it."
The Emmy-winning actress described his death as “not shocking” because, as Aniston said, she and her castmates Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer always feared getting the news of Perry’s death.
“[We] always said, 'I hope I never get that phone call,' " the actress said. "We miss him. He’s missed. He was a brilliant human being and an extraordinary talent, loved deeply."
Aniston and Perry have shared a close, affectionate friendship since their Friends days. Though never romantically involved, they deeply cared for each other and stayed in touch long after the show ended.
