Meghan Markle's acting return sparks backlash from PR experts

Meghan Markle’s surprise return to acting has sparked backlash from PR experts, who claim her cameo role in the new Amazon MGM film Close Personal Friends is nothing more than a “headline grab.”

The 44-year-old Duchess of Sussex made waves this week after being spotted filming in Los Angeles, just hours before Prince William’s Earthshot Prize ceremony in Brazil. 

While reports suggest her role in the movie is small, Meghan’s re-entry into Hollywood has already dominated global headlines.

However, PR strategist Renae Smith, founder of The Atticism, told the Express the move “isn’t exactly a comeback.” 

"Playing yourself isn’t acting, it’s just Meghan being Meghan, only with better lighting and perhaps a better storyline. It feels more like a headline grab than a professional reinvention.”

“It’s confusing. Meghan has spent years repositioning herself as a philanthropist and businesswoman, then as a lifestyle influencer, but definitely not as a performer. 

"This move muddies the narrative: is she building a brand, or chasing relevance?”

The Duchess stars alongside Lily Collins, Brie Larson, and Henry Golding in the Jason Orley-directed film.
