Macaulay Culkin reprises iconic Kevin role in ‘Home Alone’

Macaulay Culkin has thrilled fans by stepping back into his iconic role as Kevin McCallister for a new Christmas campaign.

The 45-year-old actor rose to fame in 1990 with the blockbuster hit Home Alone, which became an instant holiday classic and established him as one of the most popular child actors of the decade.

The Home But Not Alone campaign, created by Home Instead, sees Kevin all grown up and caring for his ageing mum, Kate McCallister, once again played by Catherine O’Hara.

But instead of battling burglars, his mission now is to make sure mum stays safe at home, from securing carpets to installing stairlifts.

In the ad, Kevin confesses: “I’m just worried about Mom being by herself. What if she falls down or gets snowed in?” before a run-in with Old Man Marley’s granddaughter offers a touching reminder about the importance of talking to loved ones about care.

Director Jody Hill described the campaign as “real, funny, and deeply human,” blending festive nostalgia with a powerful message about ageing and family.

The ads will air during Home Alone screenings and Christmas TV until January, with bonus clips featuring nods to classic moments, including Kevin’s grocery bags splitting on the street.

Notably, Kevin’s spirit lives on in Culkin’s real life too as the actor revealed his son Dakota, 4, believes he’s Kevin.

“He thinks he went down the stairs on a sled,” he laughed. “I told him, ‘You lying liar who lies!’”

Why did Macaulay Culkin stop acting?

Macaulay Culkin stepped away from acting in the mid-1990s due to a combination of personal and professional pressures. 

After rising to global fame with Home Alone and its sequel, the intense public attention and the demands of child stardom took a heavy toll on him.

While he has occasionally returned to acting and media projects, he has largely avoided the spotlight that defined his early career.
