Prince Louis may be next in line for one of the royal family’s most controversial titles -The Duke of York – which previously belonged to Prince Andrew.

On October 17, 2025, Andrew, 65, confirmed he would no longer use his royal title, explaining that “the continued accusations about me distract from the work of King Charles III and the royal family.” The move leaves the once-prestigious dukedom in uncertain situation.

Traditionally, the title of Duke of York is granted to the monarch’s second son, a lineage stretching back to King Edward IV in 1474.

Queen Elizabeth II awarded the prestigious title to Andrew in 1986 upon his marriage with Sarah Ferguson.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are ineligible to inherit this title as the tradition states only a male heir is eligible.

For now, the title will revert to the Crown. This opens the door for 7-year-old Prince Louis, to possibly inherit the now tainted title, when his father Prince William ascends the throne as King.

Royal insiders suggest that William may grant his youngest son the honour to be Duke of York according to the tradition, while others believe he may not follow due to the titles association with Prince Andrew.

For now, Louis is more focused on childhood than royal titles. After Princess Kate joked that he had been “gathering conkers everywhere,” the World Conker Championships cheekily invited him to be their honorary patron, a request denied from the palace with a witty response saying the prince was “conker-trating on his studies.”

As speculation go around, one thing is clear, the Duke of York title’s next candidate could come with a very different kind of royal image.
