Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande return to the magical world of Oz and are widely expected to receive a second Oscar nod.
The duo will once again campaign in the lead and supporting actress categories, respectively, for Universal Pictures’ highly anticipated sequel, Wicked: For Good, Variety confirms.
Directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, the follow-up continues the story of the 2024 adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.
Picking up where the first film left off, Wicked: For Good explores the aftermath of Elphaba and Glinda’s diverging journeys, one embracing her role as the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, the other as the beloved Glinda the Good.
If both Erivo and Grande earn Oscar nods again, they would become just the seventh and eighth performers in Academy history to receive multiple nominations for the same role.
The returning cast also includes Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. While Erivo is submitted in the lead category, her co-stars are vying for supporting slots.
Fans can expect a mix of Broadway favorites and new originals, including Erivo’s haunting No Place Like Home and Grande’s sparkling The Girl in the Bubble, both composed by Stephen Schwartz, alongside John Powell.
Produced by Marc Platt and David Stone, Wicked: For Good hits theaters on November 21, and if the buzz is real, the Oscar race just got a whole lot more magical.
