Reese Witherspoon, more famously known as Hollywood’s sweetheart, shocked fans by revealing one of the darkest chapters of her life.
The 49-year-old actress, who recently made headlines with her rom-com You’re Cordially Invited, opened up about an abusive relationship that left her emotionally shattered.
Speaking on The New York Times’ The Interview podcast, the Morning Show star admitted, “I was very good at being a professional and showing up, but I wasn’t emotionally mature when I was young.”
Despite the brave face she showed the world, she was far from the picture of strength she appeared to be in public.
Moreover, the Legally Blonde actress said she became trapped in a toxic relationship that eroded her sense of self.
“My spirit had been diminished because I thought all those awful things were true. I had to rewire my brain,” she revealed.
Witherspoon confessed it took years of healing to rebuild her strength and identity.
The star also reflected on how far she’s come: “It took me a long time to be this woman that I am now.”
Her searingly honest comments echoed her 2018 admission to Oprah Winfrey, when she revealed that confronting abuse had changed her “on a cellular level” and allowed her to finally embrace her ambition.
Most recently, the Oscar-winning actress starred in You’re Cordially Invited, turning heads alongside comedy icon Will Ferrell.
Notably, the romantic comedy film premiered in January 2025 and is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
