Shawn Levy, who is directing the new Star Wars: Starfighter movie, released the first look of the protagonist featuring Ryan Gosling.

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, the director shared a photo via Instagram of Gosling donning the costume, offering the first BTS from the film’s set.

Gosling and Flynn Gray are posing in the photo as the Mediterranean Sea sparkled behind them on a sunny day.

“Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea #Starfighter,” Levy captioned the image.

Following its announcement earlier this year at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Disney confirmed its release date as May 28, 2027.

“The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,” Gosling told the crowd at the April fan event. “It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

Although the plot details remain hidden, the stand-alone story takes place about five years after 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the franchise’s most recent theatrical entry.

Ahead of that, Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, a spinoff of the Disney+ hit The Mandalorian, is slated to premiere in cinemas on May 22, 2026.

Besides Gosling and Gray, other cast members for Star Wars: Starfighter include Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
