Akon’s wife Tomeka Thaim files for divorce due to polygamy?
Akon and estranged wife Tomeka Thaim have been together for nearly three decades
Akon’s wife, Tomeka Thaim has filed for divorce from the Smack That singer just days before what would’ve been their 29th wedding anniversary.
The mother-of-one’s filing is dated for Thursday, September 11 and contains a few conditions.
As per People, the document cites irreconcilable differences as the cause, with the separation date noted as “TBD.”
Tomeka also requested that the Lonely singer be prevented from asking for spousal support, in turn being the one to provide it to her.
She further asks for physical custody over their daughter, with Akon getting visitation rights with her.
The divorce proceedings have also made the Right Now hitmaker’s infamous comments about polygamy resurface.
In a 2022 interview with The Zeze Mills Show, “[Polygamy is] part of our culture. Absolutely, for me, it looks normal, because it’s culture for us.”
“We didn’t go outside of our African culture when we got to the Western world. See, the flaw that the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account,” he continued.
Notably, Akon has often openly talked about his polygamous beliefs, but it is unclear as of yet if the pair is separating because of this since the reason has not been confirmed.

Akon has nine children, but has only been married once, confirming that he has been with multiple partners over the years.
