Nina Dobrev, who played one of the main leads, Elena Gilbert, alongside Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, is exposing the discrimination she faced on the show.
The Canadian actress was signed with The CW Network, which as per her claims, paid her male-coworkers significantly more than the supernatural drama’s female cast.
In Samantha Highfill's debut book, I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries, the Degrassi The Next Generation star opened up about the renewal of the stars on the show’s contracts for its third season.
"I had to be on set for double the amount of time, I had to memorize double the amount of lines,I wanted to play Katherine, but I wanted to be compensated fairly for that, and I wanted to be an equal to the boys," she said, referring to her evil doppelgänger from the series.
"I remember feeling like the studio didn't appreciate what I was bringing to the show, and it felt like they were saying that all the hard work I was putting into it didn't matter to them and that I wasn't an equal to my male counterparts, and so that was upsetting to me," the actress stated.
Nina also recounted that it got so bad that the showrunner Julie Plec had to practically beg the network for equal pay, but to no avail as the network allegedly ended up removing Katherine’s character so they wouldn’t have to pay.
Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley played vampire brothers Damon and Stefan Salvatore respectively in The Vampire Diaries.
