Joe Caroff, who is notable for designing the iconic logo of the movie series James Bond, has passed away on Sunday at the age of 103.

The news of his sad passing was confirmed by his sons Pete and Michael.

The two told The New York Times that he died a day before his 104th birthday at his home in Manhattan.

Apart from the franchise, the legendary artist has been credited for the introductory title sequences of movies including A Bridge Too Far, The Last Temptation of Christ and Brighton Beach.

Joe has designed the posters of films like A Fistful of Dollars and Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Sad.

He is notable for creating the ABC’s Olympic coverage logo and the album covers for Decca Records.

In 2022 TCM documentary By Design: The Joe Caroff Story, the artworker insisted that he wants his creations to have “effervescence” and “life.”

“It doesn’t want to lie there flat,” he shared.

After being hired for creating the poster for West Side Story, Joe was asked to design a Bond movie’s letterhead for a publicity release.

How was James Bond 007 logo made?

In 2021, he recalled the brainstorming process of making "007" where he felt the need to add “a little decorative thing on top.”

During the process, the artist released that the “stem of the seven” resembled “the handle of a gun to me” which became an “instant piece of creativity.”
