President Donald Trump announced that his A-list buddy Sylvester Stallone will be a Kennedy Centre honouree, eventually positioning himself as a bigger celeb than him.

On Wednesday, August 13, as a first-time chief of the Kennedy Centre, President Donald Trump declared Stallone, among other popular celebrities, for the prestigious Kennedy Centre Honours.

Trump praised Stallone for being a “three-time Oscar nominee, Golden Globe award winner, an action movie icon and a friend of mine” before announcing him for the prestige.

The U.S. President applauded the Escape Plan franchise star as “one of the biggest names on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” eventually turning around and saying, “In fact, the only bigger name is a guy named Donald Trump.”

In the bigger picture, this statement of Trump’s shows how he has mastered self-branding.

Instead of letting the moment belong to Stallone, Trump effortlessly repositioned the spotlight onto himself, a classic Trump tactic.

The President has been popularly seen conflating political leadership with pop culture stardom, with celebs like Taylor Swift and Stephen Colbert.

However, the key shock is that Stallone was his “friend,” as he said it, and Trump still tried to reinforce his image as a showman president who thrives on spectacle.
