Why Princess Charlotte is more likely to wear Dianas tiara than Lilibet

One of Princess Diana’s most iconic accessories, the Spencer Tiara, could soon grace the head of a new generation royal, with experts suggesting Princess Charlotte is the most likely future wearer.

The diamond-encrusted headpiece, valued at approximately £400,000, famously adorned Diana’s head on her 1981 wedding day to then-Prince Charles.

Rather than choosing a tiara from the royal collection, the late Princess of Wales opted for the Spencer family heirloom, which she wore regularly throughout her royal life.

Since Diana’s death in 1997, the tiara has remained largely out of public view. It was last seen in 2018, worn by her niece Celia McCorquodale at her wedding.

According to jewellery expert Maxwell Stone of Steven Stone Jewellers, the Spencer Tiara is not part of the Crown Jewels or royal collection, meaning it remains under the private ownership of Diana’s family.

Currently, it is believed to be held by Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, Diana’s brother.

Stone told the Daily Express that while both Princess Charlotte and Princess Lilibet could potentially wear the tiara one day, Charlotte is the more likely candidate.

“As a key figure within the core royal family, Charlotte embodies her grandmother’s legacy in a very public way,” he said.

“The Spencer Tiara would be a fitting and symbolic choice for a future occasion, particularly a wedding.”

“While Princess Lilibet shares the same lineage, her path is less entwined with royal custom, which may make access to the tiara less straightforward,” Stone noted.
